Liz Jarvis, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, has said they will “fight for WASPI women” as data reveals that an estimated 5,180 women in Eastleigh could be affected.

The Government has announced that it will not compensate women hit by changes to the state pension age, despite backing campaigners in opposition, with Liz Jarvis MP saying that they have been “betrayed” and calling the decision “simply wrong”.

Ms Jarvis sits as the Vice Chair of the State Pension Inequality for Women APPG and has been a vocal supporter of the campaign.

Data from the House of Commons Library, using population estimates, indicates that 5,180 in Eastleigh could be impacted by the decision.

Liz Jarvis MP has called on the Government to “urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision.”

Commenting on the data, Liz Jarvis, MP for Eastleigh, said:

“These shocking figures show that thousands of people in Eastleigh have been betrayed by the Government’s decision to not compensate WASPI women. This is simply wrong.

“The Government has turned its back on millions of women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s recommendations, and that is frankly disgraceful.

“The Conservatives left our economy in a shambles, but pensioners shouldn’t be asked to pay the price. The Liberal Democrats will fight for WASPI women in Eastleigh, and the Government must urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision.”
